Head Sacristan Job Description

“Let all be done with love.” — 1 Corinthians 16:14

St Margaret Clitherow Church, a welcoming and active parish community in Grahame Park, is seeking to appoint a Head Sacristan to support and serve the liturgical life of our parish through the care and preparation of our sacred spaces.

About the Role

The Head Sacristan plays a vital role in supporting the Parish Priest and parish community by overseeing the preparation of Mass and ensuring the proper maintenance of the sacristy, sanctuary, and all associated items used in worship. This includes preparation for weekday and Sunday liturgies, and the supervision of volunteers who support this ministry.

Your work will help create a prayerful and reverent environment where the liturgy may be celebrated with dignity, beauty, and devotion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation and clearing of the church and sacristy for Mass (Saturday evening, Sunday, weekdays).

  • Setting up liturgical books, vessels, vestments, and altar furnishings.

  • Supervising parish volunteers supporting the liturgical setup.

  • Supporting the Parish Priest in catechesis.

  • Maintaining sacred linens, vestments, and vessels.

  • Ensuring the security, cleanliness, and reverent upkeep of the sacristy and related areas.

  • Ordering and managing liturgical supplies.

  • Taking every reasonable step to ensure services begin on time and run smoothly.

  • Undertaking relevant diocesan training (e.g. safeguarding, GDPR).

Please note: While many duties fall within the paid role, some aspects—such as additional liturgical preparations, care of vestments, and procurement—may be supported on a voluntary basis, in keeping with the spirit of service in our parish life.

About You

We are looking for someone who feels called to serve the Church and brings a spirit of dedication, reliability, and care to this ministry. The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills.

  • The ability to work independently, as well as part of a collaborative parish team.

  • Sensitivity to the sacred nature of the role and a respectful approach to diverse people and situations.
