St Paul the Apostle, Wood Green, is seeking a dedicated and detail‑focused Bookkeeper to take responsibility for the effective financial administration of the parish. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with strong accounting skills who is looking for flexible part‑time work within a welcoming parish community.
About the Role
As our Parish Bookkeeper, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth financial running of the parish. You will be responsible for maintaining accurate accounts, managing income and expenditure, preparing reports, supporting Parish Finance Committee meetings, and ensuring all financial procedures follow diocesan guidelines.
Key areas of responsibility include:
Parish Accounts & Finance
- Recording all income and expenditure using the diocesan OPAS system
- Completing monthly bank reconciliations
- Recording clergy credit card expenditure
- Preparing quarterly finance reports
- Assisting with annual budget preparation and monitoring
- Submitting the Annual Financial Return
- Managing recurring payments and liaising with suppliers
- Maintaining orderly and secure financial records
Planned Giving & Gift Aid
- Maintaining the parish Planned Giving register
- Administering Gift Aid processes on OPAS
- Recording donations via envelopes, standing orders, online and contactless systems
- Producing annual Gift Aid declaration reports
- Managing GASDS claims
Training & Compliance
- Completing mandatory safeguarding and AFR training
- Supporting the Parish Priest where required, including coordination with volunteer counters

Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience in bookkeeping or a similar finance role
- Strong knowledge of financial accounting systems (OPAS experience is an advantage)
- AAT qualification (or equivalent)
- Good understanding of Microsoft Office, especially Excel
- Ability to work methodically, meet deadlines, and use initiative
- Understanding of Catholic social and moral teaching
- Ability to coordinate volunteers when required
Experience working in a faith-based or charitable setting is welcome but not essential.
